France Opens Criminal Probe Into Elon Musk and X Over Illegal Content

French prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into Elon Musk and X, escalating a months-long probe into illegal content on the social platform. The investigation targets sexual images of minors on the platform, along with Grok's dissemination of Holocaust-denial claims and sexually explicit deepfakes.

Authorities raided X's Paris office three months ago and summoned Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino for questioning in April. Neither appeared. Prosecutors described the initial interview request as voluntary but are now seeking to compel their appearance with the threat of preliminary criminal charges.

The Paris public prosecutor's office announced the move, asking investigating judges to charge X Corp., xAI, Musk, and Yaccarino. If they fail to appear, they risk being charged in absentia. The investigation aims to uphold the law and protect victims of criminal offenses both online and in real life. X previously refused to comply with a court order to hand over its algorithm.
