Garmin adds WhatsApp to select smartwatches

Garmin is expanding smartwatch functionality by adding WhatsApp support to select devices including fēnix, Forerunner, Venu, and vivoactive models. Users can now view messages, reply with the built-in keyboard, send emojis, react to texts, and access their last 10 messages directly from their wrist. The app also supports WhatsApp calls with notifications and call handling options.

Available through the Connect IQ store, this integration brings third-party messaging to Garmin watches for the first time. The company emphasizes that WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption remains intact, ensuring private conversations whether sent via text or voice. This marks a significant shift for Garmin, which previously limited messaging to its proprietary platforms.

While competitors have offered similar features for years, Garmin's move could attract users who want fitness tracking without sacrificing messaging convenience. The timing is notable given the high prices of current models like the Quatix 8 Pro at $1,300. For outdoor enthusiasts and athletes who've relied on Garmin's robust tracking capabilities, this addition bridges a long-standing gap between specialized hardware and everyday communication needs.
