Google phases out Gemini Gems for Skills in October rollout

Google is replacing Gemini Gems with a more flexible system called Skills, beginning October 5 in Workspace and October 13 in the Gemini app. Gems will start exiting in November. Skills are reusable, modular building blocks that can be stacked together for complex tasks, capturing brand voice, templates, and processes.

The biggest upgrade is that skills can now be combined, allowing users to have a Skill for writing newsletters and another for brand guidelines, with Gemini automatically recognizing applicable Skills. Built on open standards using Markdown, Skills will also be available to personal Google accounts. Skills developed in Gemini and Workspace will not automatically sync between them, requiring separate creation.

The transition happens in stages: Gems transfer to Gemini Settings on November 17, remain usable temporarily, with business/enterprise accounts retaining Gems until March 1, 2027, and education accounts until June 1. Remaining Gems will eventually convert to draft Skills.
