Apple has added another raft of movies to watch for free with an Apple TV subscription, while seemingly not yet removing all of the previous set. Apple has famously not bought any broadcaster or streamer's library of titles, but from early on it has bought the occasional film. Now following one tranche of titles back in August, Apple TV has added still more, all included in its subscription.
Unless you buy out an entire library, then for historical reasons of how films are distributed worldwide, it is extraordinarily complex to acquire the rights to individual titles. Apple has not secured global rights to all of its new titles, either, meaning that different films are available in different countries. In the US, Apple has now added: 28 Days Later, American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Blood Diamond, Fallen, Fury, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Going the Distance, Good Will Hunting, Insomnia, Jurassic World, Taxi Driver, Tropic Thunder.
In the UK, for example, the newly added titles are: Godzilla, Inception, Jurassic World, The Martian, The Social Network, Spider-Man: Far from Home, The Town, War of the Worlds (2005 version). That's a significant expansion for the UK, which in August only saw 6 movies added to the US's 19.
While at least most of August's additions appear to still be available in the US, don't expect any of them to last. They will have been acquired for a specific period only, and Apple has not said what that period is. Given how the UK, at least, has already lost some titles, if there is a film you want to see, you should watch it now. Note that this only applies to these newly added classic movies.
