NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has delivered another breathtaking cosmic portrait with new images of the Exposed Cranium Nebula. Officially designated Nebula PMR 1, this brain-shaped cloud of space dust and gas reveals the final stages of stellar evolution. The images showcase distinct regions capturing different phases of the nebula's development, from outer hydrogen shells to structured inner clouds.

Both Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) were used to document the nebula's intricate details. The dark vertical line creating the cranial appearance may result from twin jets bursting out in opposite directions from the central star. NASA scientists note the nebula's structure shows an outer shell of gas blown off first, followed by a more complex inner region containing various gases.

The Exposed Cranium Nebula joins Webb's growing gallery of stunning cosmic imagery, continuing to transform our understanding of stellar death and rebirth. These observations provide valuable data about how nebulae form their distinctive shapes and evolve over time, offering astronomers new insights into the life cycles of stars.
