NASA is celebrating four years of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) with its most detailed look yet at the active galaxy Centaurus A. Located approximately 11 million light-years away, Centaurus A features a supermassive black hole and a unique structure resulting from an ancient galactic collision.

Previous observations by telescopes like Hubble and Spitzer were limited by dust or resolution. JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), however, has captured fine details within the galaxy's dust structures, revealing glowing dots that represent dust-rich stars or stellar nurseries where new stars are forming. The telescope also utilized its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) for a combined view.

These new images allow scientists to study Centaurus A on a granular level, star by star. This detailed data is expected to provide insights into how galaxies and black holes co-evolve, offering a clearer timeline for galactic evolution than previously possible.
