Vimeo conducted massive layoffs just months after private equity firm Bending Spoons acquired the video platform for $1.38 billion in late 2025. Former employees report the entire video team was cut, with the company's former VP of Global Brand & Creative confirming his departure. The layoffs hit "most of the company," according to social media posts.

Bending Spoons follows a familiar playbook of aggressive cost-cutting after acquisitions, having previously laid off most of Evernote's US workforce in 2023 and cut 75% of WeTransfer's staff in 2024. The private equity firm stated it remains "committed to growing Vimeo" despite eliminating its core video engineering talent.

Vimeo positioned itself as a premium alternative to YouTube for creative and business videos since its 2004 founding. With minimal staff and no video team, the platform's future direction remains unclear. Former employees express frustration at seeing a legacy technology company dismantled by private equity for profit.
