Uber Expands EV Incentive Program: $4,000 Grants for Drivers

Uber is significantly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) incentive program across the entire United States. This follows a successful pilot in select cities last year and offers drivers a $4,000 grant to switch from their current vehicle to a new or used electric car. The program targets Uber's top-tier drivers – Platinum and Diamond members – who must complete 100 eligible rides by December 31st to qualify. Applications open on April 16th via the platform's website.

Beyond the core grant, Uber provides additional savings. Drivers purchasing an EV through its partner TrueCar receive a $1,000 discount. Furthermore, Kia has partnered with Uber to offer substantial vehicle discounts: $1,000 off the Niro or EV6 and $1,500 off the EV9 SUV. While these combined incentives total $7,000, they fall short of the $7,500 federal tax credit previously available for used EVs, which was eliminated by the Trump administration's "Big, Beautiful Bill." This policy gap highlights the financial challenges drivers face, especially considering the average full-time Uber driver earns $42,000 annually.

Uber's push is part of a broader industry shift. The company reports over 286,000 EVs are currently active on its platform globally, and drivers are adopting EVs at a rate much faster than the general US, Canadian, and European car-buying public. This expansion aims to accelerate that trend, though the math remains tight for drivers needing to spend more than a year's salary on necessary equipment.
