Uber has laid off 10 percent of its Community Operations team, its global customer support network, citing AI as the reason for the cuts. A spokesperson said the move aims "to simplify operations, strengthen in-person collaboration and continue to embrace AI." Vice president Megha Yethadka told staff in a memo that the organization had become "too complex and siloed" and needs an "effective organization to layer AI on" to scale its use.

The company did not specify which generative AI applications necessitated the layoffs, though AI agents for customer service have improved significantly. Voice AI can now naturally communicate with customers and understand their needs. Alongside the job cuts, Uber reportedly required remote team members to relocate to hub offices as part of a return-to-office mandate.

Uber joins a growing list of companies attributing layoffs to AI adoption. In June, Oracle cut 21,000 roles worldwide citing AI deployment. Snap laid off around 1,000 workers in April, and Meta reduced its workforce by 10 percent affecting 8,000 jobs before moving 7,000 personnel to AI-focused organizations.
