Trump delays AI safety executive order amid tech industry pressure

President Trump postponed signing an executive order establishing government oversight of artificial intelligence systems, citing dissatisfaction with certain provisions. The order would have required AI companies to share advanced models with federal agencies before public release, though it was later revised to make participation voluntary.

The delay follows intense lobbying from Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and former AI czar David Sacks, who warned that oversight requirements could hamper development of technology they view as critical to economic growth. These industry leaders argued that regulatory frameworks might slow innovation in a sector that has become integral to the US economy.

The original draft mandated companies submit AI models 90 days before public release, but tech executives feared even voluntary participation could create a chilling effect on development. Concerns also emerged about advanced models like Anthropic's Mythos, designed to identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities, potentially falling into the wrong hands without proper safeguards.

White House officials expressed surprise at the postponement, particularly given Sacks' earlier indication he could accept the voluntary framework. The administration's historically hands-off approach to AI regulation may be shifting amid voter concerns about job displacement and energy costs associated with large-scale AI operations.
