ThermoWorks Gravitas Scale Debuts Detachable Display and 20-Minute Memory

ThermoWorks, best known for its food thermometers, is expanding into precision scales with the Gravitas. The company built its reputation on accuracy and rigorous testing, bringing that same approach to this new kitchen category. While the scale promises precise measurements, its design innovations may actually steal the spotlight.

The standout feature is a fully wireless, removable display that eliminates obstruction issues from large bowls. Users can position the backlit screen anywhere convenient thanks to integrated magnets and 180-degree auto rotation. Connectivity uses 2.4GHz RF rather than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, simplifying setup. Battery performance is substantial: the base unit runs 300 hours on four AA batteries, while the display manages 350 hours on two AAs.

Accuracy meets precision with measurements to 0.1 grams and 0.001 ounces, backed by NIST-traceable certified calibration that guarantees accuracy within 0.7 grams. The scale handles loads up to 11 pounds (5kg) and includes a 20-minute memory feature that preserves readings during standby mode. An IP66 rating protects against dust and water, and the measuring plate removes for hand washing.

Priced at $119 for pre-order in five colors, the Gravitas represents ThermoWorks' first step into scales, potentially raising expectations for accuracy in a market dominated by cheaper alternatives.
