Starlink is preparing to launch its next-generation V2 satellites, aiming to deliver 150 Mbps download speeds that rival traditional terrestrial networks. During a keynote at Mobile World Congress, SpaceX's Michael Nicolls described the goal as providing a 'terrestrial-like' connectivity experience that would feel comparable to a high-performing 5G network. The upgraded constellation promises 100 times the data density of current satellites, enabling faster streaming, browsing, and more reliable voice calls.

These next-gen satellites will launch in mid-2027, with SpaceX planning to deploy over 50 V2 satellites per launch. The company aims to complete the full constellation within six months, targeting polar regions where traditional networks struggle with coverage. This expansion addresses one of satellite internet's biggest weaknesses—providing reliable service in remote and extreme latitude areas where conventional infrastructure is impractical or nonexistent.

Beyond the technical upgrades, Starlink announced a partnership with Deutsche Telekom to address internet coverage gaps across Europe starting in 2028. This collaboration will leverage Starlink's constellation to fill coverage dead zones in the German telecom giant's network. The V2 upgrade represents a significant leap forward for satellite internet, potentially making it a viable alternative to traditional broadband in both rural areas and regions with challenging terrain.
