The Federal Communications Commission has approved SpaceX's request to deploy an additional 7,500 Gen2 Starlink satellites, expanding its total authorized constellation to 15,000 units. This regulatory milestone allows SpaceX to enhance global internet coverage and mobile connectivity through advanced satellite technology and optimized orbital positioning. The expanded deployment enables SpaceX to offer direct-to-cell services internationally and supplemental coverage within the United States, strengthening its existing T-Mobile partnership that provides satellite-to-phone connectivity for text messaging and app access in remote areas.

This decision follows SpaceX's initiative to lower 4,400 satellites from 341 miles to 298 miles altitude, reducing collision risks. Originally seeking permission for nearly 30,000 satellites in 2020, SpaceX received limited approval in 2022 due to orbital debris concerns. The latest approval represents a significant expansion of SpaceX's space-based internet infrastructure capabilities and global telecommunications reach.
