Samsung has partnered with the Massachusetts General Hospital Diabetes Research Center to see if its Galaxy Watch 8 can mitigate muscle loss in patients starting GLP‑1 medications such as Ozempic. The study will tap the watch’s bioelectrical impedance analysis, activity tracking, and heart‑rate monitoring, feeding data into Samsung Health for real‑time insights.

Researchers will enroll 100 adults newly prescribed GLP‑1 therapy, splitting them into a wearable group and a control receiving standard guidance. The wearable cohort will receive personalized exercise prompts and continuous body‑composition readings, while both groups undergo clinical DXA scans to quantify lean‑mass changes. Early data could reveal whether continuous biometric feedback improves outcomes.

If the trial shows a measurable preservation of muscle, Samsung could position its wearables as a therapeutic adjunct for a drug class used by roughly one‑in‑five U.S. adults. The company has already leveraged academic collaborations to refine sleep‑apnea detection and fainting prediction, suggesting a broader strategy to embed health‑management features into its consumer hardware.
