Starting February 2nd, Pornhub will restrict access for new UK users. This decision, announced by parent company Aylo, stems from the Online Safety Act and its age verification mandates. Existing, verified users will still have access. The Act requires adult sites to implement "highly effective" age verification methods, prompting this shift in policy.

This move follows similar actions in the US where age verification laws led to Pornhub's unavailability in certain states. Aylo argues that the new system pushes users towards non-compliant sites. VPNs are commonly used to bypass such restrictions, but the UK is also considering a ban on VPNs for children and a social media ban for users under 16, mirroring Australia.

Aylo's VP of Brand and Community, Alexzandra Kekesi, stated that those who haven't verified their age before the deadline will be blocked. This illustrates the complex challenges of balancing online safety with user privacy. The situation highlights the ongoing debate between protecting children and ensuring access to information.

The Online Safety Act aims to protect children, but its implementation has unintended consequences. The industry will likely continue to grapple with these issues, as websites balance legal compliance with the need to serve their users. The long-term effects of this ban remain to be seen.
