Opera Browser Adds Paste Protect to Block Clipboard Malware Attacks

Opera has rolled out Paste Protect, a security feature designed to stop malicious clipboard attacks that have become a favored method for delivering malware. The browser can now detect and block harmful scripts before they copy to your clipboard, marking a first for major browsers. This addresses the growing threat of social engineering attacks that trick users into running malicious code.

Click Fix attacks work by disguising malicious code as CAPTCHA verification. When users click "I'm not a robot," the attack copies harmful commands to their clipboard, then instructs them to paste and execute the code using keyboard shortcuts. These attacks commonly deploy infostealer malware like Lumma Stealer, which harvests passwords, autofill data, and cookies.

Paste Protect actively monitors for malicious scripts across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms. When detected, it blocks the copy operation and displays a warning while flagging the address bar with a red icon. Users can review the first 120 command characters and whitelist trusted sites if flagged incorrectly. The feature activates by default in Opera's latest update.

Opera built its reputation on efficient memory usage and integrated VPN services. While other browsers offer security extensions, Paste Protect represents native browser-level defense against this specific attack vector. The update is currently rolling out to users globally.
