Opera Browser Adds Paste Protect to Block Clipboard-Based Cyberattacks

Opera browser introduces Paste Protect, a new security feature designed to prevent ClickFix attacks that trick users into executing malicious commands through copied clipboard content. The feature launches enabled by default across Opera's desktop browsers, marking what the company calls a first among major browser platforms.

ClickFix attacks disguise themselves as routine troubleshooting prompts like CAPTCHA verification failures or video playback issues. When users copy and paste the suggested commands into their terminal, they unknowingly install malware, surrender passwords, or grant remote device access. These social engineering schemes exploit user trust in seemingly legitimate website interactions.

Paste Protect builds on Opera's existing clipboard hijack protection by adding injection monitoring that scans for suspicious commands copied from websites. The system blocks malicious content before it reaches the clipboard, though users can preview the first 120 characters and developers can whitelist trusted sources. Huntress research shows ClickFix attacks represented over 53 percent of malware-loading cyberattacks in the past year, highlighting the threat's rapid proliferation.

Apple implemented a similar safeguard in macOS Tahoe 26.4, which warns users before pasting dangerous terminal commands. Opera's approach differs by stopping malicious content at the browser level rather than relying on operating system prompts. The update is available now as a free download from Opera's website.
