OpenAI to Notify Parents About Teen Account Deactivations

OpenAI will now alert parents when a linked teen account is deactivated for violating violence policies. Parents can also set time limits and filter sensitive content. Parents can receive an “important update” message, click Learn More, and see that the account was disabled for acts of violence.

The feature was developed with Moonshot, a firm that monitors and counters online violence. Moonshot founder Vidhya Ramalingam said the notification gives families a chance to intervene early. The alert also provides context, helping parents understand why the account was closed.

The push comes after 2025 Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, mass‑shooting suspect used ChatGPT, and authorities reported the company failed to notify them after banning the account. The incident highlighted gaps in OpenAI’s policy enforcement. Sam Altman apologized for the oversight, pledging stronger safety protocols.

Alongside the new alerts, parents can toggle Study Mode from the controls, which nudges teens with hints before answers to aid learning. The bot also shows extended‑time users frequent break reminders, encouraging healthier tech habits. These tools aim to balance safety with educational use.
