OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, an AI experience designed to support learning, critical thinking, and safe AI usage for users aged 13-17. The platform automatically routes users under 18 into this teen-specific environment, featuring enhanced safety protections and parental controls.

Key learning tools include Study Mode with guiding questions and step-by-step support, responsible homework reminders that redirect students to collaborative problem-solving, quizzes, learning visualizations, and customizable Study Hours to build better study routines. These tools were developed with educators and learning science research, emphasizing active retrieval and self-explanation over passive review.

Safety features include age-appropriate model protections targeting self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and explicit content. Parents can set Quiet Hours, manage settings, and receive limited safety notifications. The platform also discourages emotional dependence through restrictions on romantic language and cues that clearly identify ChatGPT as AI.

OpenAI is partnering with Code.org to provide AI education resources, while teen developers like Rushil Kukreja and Crystal Yang demonstrate real-world applications—from search-and-rescue systems to educational platforms for blind students. The initiative reflects OpenAI's commitment to putting teen safety first while expanding educational opportunity through responsible AI.
