Old iPod Gets Modern Upgrades with Sprout Pi

Apple discontinued the iPod years ago, but a vibrant modding community keeps the classic devices alive. A London studio’s Sprout Pi Mainboard project aims to breathe new life into older iPod models by replacing their entire logic board with a modern one that adds Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a hi‑fi DAC, USB‑C charging, microSD support, and streaming via Apple Music and Spotify. The board retains the original screen and click wheel, preserving the nostalgic look while unlocking contemporary features.

Compatibility is limited to select models like 1st/2nd‑gen iPod mini and 3rd/4th‑gen iPods; the iPod classic, nano, and original color‑screen iPods are excluded. Two versions exist: a local‑playback variant and a Wi‑Fi‑enabled version for streaming apps. The Crowd Supply campaign is still in pre‑launch, with no pricing or release date announced.

Prospective buyers must supply their own iPod, which can be costly depending on the model.
