Notion kills email client to bet on AI agents for inbox management

Notion will shut down its email client on September 22, ending the service across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. The company announced the move as it shifts focus toward agentic AI solutions for email management instead of maintaining a traditional inbox interface.

More than half of Notion Mail users already manage their emails without opening the inbox interface, according to the company. This trend toward AI-driven email workflows convinced Notion to abandon the standalone email client and double down on automated email handling through its agents platform.

Users face a manual data migration process. While most emails remain accessible through Gmail, customers must export their drafts, scheduled emails, snippets, and auto-label instructions before the shutdown date. Notion published an FAQ to guide users through preserving their data during the transition.

The email service launched after Notion acquired privacy-focused startup Skiff in 2024. This shutdown reflects Notion's broader strategy shift toward AI-powered productivity rather than building traditional email clients, betting that automated agents can better handle inbox management than human users.
