Hello Games has introduced Xeno Arena, a free update that adds Pokémon-style creature battles to No Man's Sky. Players can now deploy their adopted alien companions in turn-based battles against rival teams on Holo-Arena tables found throughout the universe. As you win battles, you'll increase your reputation and unlock more challenging opponents.

These creatures can launch powerful attacks, use healing abilities, dodge incoming salvos, and even mutate into new forms as they gain experience. Players can modify their squad's progeny, with personality traits and physical characteristics affecting battle performance. The update introduces eight affinities or "types" including fire, ice, and radiation, creating strategic depth as certain types counter others.

The battles take place on holographic tables where creatures appear almost pocket-sized, leading to playful comparisons with Pokémon's pocket monsters. This addition represents a significant evolution for No Man's Sky, which has continually expanded since its controversial launch in 2016 through regular free updates that transform the game's core experience.
