The Unicode Consortium is set to release nine new emoji by next spring, offering fresh ways to express emotions and concepts. Among the additions is the Cracking Face, a smiling face that crumbles apart, symbolizing a facade of positivity when one is not okay. This emoji replaces the previously accepted Face with Squinting Eyes on the Unicode 18 list.

Another notable inclusion is the Meteor, depicted as a flaming meatball, intended to represent annihilation, distinguishing it from the existing Comet emoji. The update also introduces an Eraser and a Net With Handle. The Monarch Butterfly emoji arrives to provide a distinct representation of beauty and resilience, addressing fragmentation where users previously saw different butterfly types. Jennifer Daniel, Chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, explained the Monarch carries a narrative of "generational resilience, endurance and deep ancestral memory."

Additional emoji include a Lighthouse and two hands with opposing thumbs, useful for pointing. Finally, a Pickle emoji is also on its way, though its reception remains uncertain.
