Netflix Releases VHS Version of Stranger Things Season 1

Netflix has released a "VHS" special edition of Stranger Things Season 1, allowing viewers to "Rewatch Season 1 like it's 1983." The version mimics the look of a VHS tape with a 4:3 aspect ratio, complete with large black bars on modern screens unless viewed on a CRT display.

The picture features a grainy, soft blur quality reminiscent of rental tapes from the era. "If Stranger Things existed in Hawkins, sitting on a shelf at Family Video, it would look just like this — complete with pan-and-scan," the Duffer brothers said. Pan-and-scan is an editing technique that fits wide pictures into smaller screens by cutting off sides and panning across the image.

Even Netflix's opening animation was edited to appear dated, though audio remains unchanged. The Duffer brothers indicated they'll "maybe" release VHS edits for other seasons if enough people watch the first. The special edition is available via the release's landing page or by searching "Stranger Things VHS" on Netflix.
