VHS Camera is a free browser-based tool that lets users shoot video and photos with a simulated 1994 VHS camcorder look. The application processes everything on the user's device, ensuring no footage is ever uploaded to a server. Users can choose from tape conditions ranging from Clean to Worn, add date stamps, and include authentic VHS sound effects like tape hiss and wobble.
The tool supports both live recording and uploading existing videos, with options to adjust noise levels and processing speed for smoother performance on slower devices. After applying the filter, users can save their creations as MP4 files while preserving original audio. The service requires no sign-up or installation, working directly in modern browsers on both iPhone and Android.
A frequently asked questions section addresses compatibility, file formats, and the technical basis of the VHS effect, which simulates NTSC encoding including colour bleed and tracking noise rather than simply overlaying a picture. The project is built by Foto Jocković and forms part of a suite of free creative tools available without accounts.
