Netflix is filming Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway this week to create a streaming version of the hit stage production. The company canceled several public performances to accommodate filming, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shows will resume on February 15 before the original cast departs next month.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow opened in New York City last year after debuting in London in 2023. The play has been both a critical and commercial success, winning multiple Tony Awards. It serves as a canonical prequel to the Netflix series, exploring the backstory of Henry Creel, who becomes Vecna - a character the show's final season also delves into.

Netflix hasn't announced when the filmed version will stream, but this move was inevitable given the company's strategy to expand the Stranger Things universe. The streaming giant has already released a documentary about the play's creation and is developing spin-off shows, including the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From '85, set to debut on April 23. This Broadway recording represents another way Netflix is maximizing its investment in the franchise after the main series concluded.
