NASA has officially transferred 103 acres of land, known as Area 400, to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This parcel, located near NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, will now become part of the Patuxent Research Refuge.

Previously used by NASA for propellant research, the land was slated for sale as those operations moved to other facilities. However, due to its proximity to the refuge, the Fish and Wildlife Service initiated discussions for a transfer in 2021. Environmental groups had previously raised concerns about potential negative impacts on the refuge if the land were sold to a private developer.

The Patuxent Research Refuge, established in 1936, is unique as the only U.S. wildlife refuge created specifically for scientific study. The addition of Area 400 supports the refuge's mission of wildlife conservation and scientific research, while also ensuring the preservation of local natural resources.
