NASA tests L3Harris cryocoupler for orbital refueling

NASA is testing a specialized refueling device designed to support deep space exploration. Developed by L3Harris, the cryocoupler acts like a gas pump nozzle for spacecraft. This technology allows vessels to link with orbiting fuel depots to replenish supplies before heading toward distant destinations in our solar system.

Transferring extremely cold fluids like liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen presents massive engineering hurdles. These propellants must remain chilled at hundreds of degrees below zero to prevent leakage. Engineers at the Marshall Space Flight Center recently tested the device using liquid nitrogen at negative 321 degrees Fahrenheit to monitor thermal reactions.

Unlike previous methods, this hardware is fully automated to eliminate the need for dangerous astronaut spacewalks. Recent tests included simulations of misaligned dockings to ensure the coupler can function during imperfect connections. Successful deployment of this system would transform how we manage fuel logistics during long-duration missions beyond Earth orbit.
