Mechanism launches $9 Basegrip to turn Steam Controller into handheld

Mechanism, known for its “gaming pillow” for the Steam Deck, is expanding its lineup with the Basegrip for Steam Controller. Launching May 4, the contoured grip slips over the back of Valve’s controller while preserving the magnetic charging puck. Priced at $9, it adds a magnetic phone mount that lets a smartphone snap to the controller’s top, turning the combo into a makeshift handheld and desk.

Because Valve restricts the Steam Controller to the Steam client and Steam Link app, the phone‑controller pairing works only for streaming PC games. iOS and Android lack native support, so most mobile titles remain inaccessible. Mechanism notes the limitation may ease with future software updates, but current utility centers on remote PC play. Performance remains comparable to the original controller.

Mechanism is also teasing a Steam Controller Dock slated for June shipment. The dock will showcase the controller when idle and integrate the charging puck, though pricing remains undisclosed. By bundling the Basegrip with existing mounts, the company pushes a modular ecosystem that could revive interest in Valve’s discontinued controller among niche gamers for enthusiasts.
