Netflix and Sony have officially greenlit a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the surprise animated hit that became Netflix's most-watched movie ever. The streaming giant and Sony Pictures Animation announced that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the follow-up, marking the first project under their new exclusive multiyear partnership with Netflix focused on animation.

KPop Demon Hunters shattered expectations after Netflix acquired the rights in 2021 as part of a larger licensing deal. The film earned over 500 million views on the platform and made over $19 million during its initial two-day theatrical run in August 2025, prompting Netflix to repeatedly bring it back to theaters despite its streaming-first strategy. It's also earned Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 98th Academy Awards.

The sequel announcement comes as Netflix expands its relationship with Sony Pictures, reportedly spending over $7 billion on an expanded film licensing partnership in January. According to Puck, Netflix's deal structure means it will likely be the only company directly profiting from the follow-up, as Sony won't earn additional revenue despite holding rights to produce sequels and spinoffs.
