The tolerances are incredibly tight and adhesives are gummy, making disassembly and reassembly nearly impossible for all but the most skilled technicians. iFixit states "very few repair enthusiasts on this planet will have the tools, techniques, or knowledge" to repair it properly. A malfunction likely requires replacing the entire camera module rather than individual components, potentially increasing repair costs significantly.

While iPhone cameras have always been challenging to repair independently, the variable aperture adds more failure points. Samsung previously implemented similar technology in the 2018 Galaxy S9 but abandoned it after image-quality benefits didn't justify the complexity.
