Many phones boast high Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, like IP68, suggesting they are waterproof. However, these ratings can be misleading. While an IP68 rating theoretically means a phone can be submerged, the specifics of water resistance vary significantly by manufacturer.

The IP rating system designates solid particle resistance (the first digit) and water resistance (the second). For water, a rating of 7 means resistance up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. For IP68, the depth and duration are determined by the manufacturer, with newer iPhones handling up to six meters for 30 minutes, while older models vary.

These ratings are tested under ideal conditions: clean, still water at moderate temperatures. Real-world scenarios involving salt, chlorine, heat, or movement can compromise a phone's protection. Additionally, minor impacts can create imperceptible damage, reducing water resistance over time. Even higher ratings like IP69, which signifies resistance to high-pressure water jets, do not guarantee submersion protection. Therefore, avoiding water exposure entirely is the safest approach for any smartphone, regardless of its IP rating.
