Image Comics' Of the Earth Delivers Gritty Horror in Oil Country

Image Comics launches Of the Earth, a new horror miniseries from writer Chris Condon and artist Charlie Adlard. The first issue introduces readers to Tabitha 'Tabby' Black, a runaway carrying cash who returns to her Texas hometown only to discover it's changed in disturbing ways.

The series blends folklore with contemporary dread, opening with local legends about the Wildcatter — a mythical oil-dwelling monster with a human face and amorphous, horned body. This sets the tone for Tabby's journey through desolate oil country, where violence and decay await. The creative team includes letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and designer Mike Tivey.

Charlie Adlard's artwork brings his The Walking Dead experience to this rural horror tale, establishing a harsh atmosphere that matches the story's themes. The first issue effectively hooks readers with its blend of domestic drama and supernatural menace. Issue two arrives June 17, promising more descent into the darkness awaiting Tabby in Solitude.

Of the Earth joins Image's roster of creator-owned horror titles that appeal to readers seeking mature storytelling outside superhero universes. The series demonstrates how comics can tackle regional American folklore while addressing contemporary social issues through genre fiction.
