In a first-of-its-kind pilot program, Honda and DriveOhio are using vehicles to proactively report road safety issues. The Proactive Roadway Maintenance System, which has been in development since 2021, leverages advanced vision and LiDAR sensors. These sensors identify problems like damaged signs, potholes, and deteriorating guardrails, aiming to improve road safety before incidents occur.

The pilot program covered 3,000 miles in Ohio, using vehicles equipped with sensors to collect real-time data. This data is processed using Edge AI models and then relayed to Honda's cloud platform. The system then generates work orders for the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), prioritizing maintenance tasks. The University of Cincinnati assisted with sensor integration and damage detection.

The system demonstrated high accuracy in identifying road hazards, with up to 99% accuracy for damaged signs. Honda estimates that wide-scale implementation could save ODOT over $4.5 million annually. Honda plans to integrate this technology into consumer vehicles, allowing drivers to contribute to safer roads via anonymous data sharing.

This initiative represents a significant step towards smart infrastructure. The ability to collect and analyze real-time data from vehicles could revolutionize road maintenance.
