Google Wallet Expands EU Digital ID Support

Google announced Wallet will support digital IDs from select EU states this summer. The expansion includes a new age verification process with Sparkasse Bank, requiring users to record a video selfie and scan their government ID. This move builds on Google's digital ID capabilities previously available in the UK and US and responds to increasing regulatory demands for online identity verification.

The age verification feature uses Zero Proof Knowledge technology introduced in April 2025. Sparkasse customers can confirm their age through Google Wallet without sharing personal details like name, address, or birth date. This approach helps comply with various age verification laws across different countries, including the UK's Online Safety Act and similar regulations in the US.

Google is also improving Google Pay checkout for EU merchants. Users can select payment options stored in Wallet with one click, similar to Apple Pay. The updated Secure Payment Authentication feature allows EU customers to complete transactions using just biometric verification, eliminating the need for one-time passcodes or additional identity verification sites.
