Google invests $75M in A24 to build AI storyboard tools

Google is pouring $75 million into indie studio A24 to co‑develop artificial‑intelligence tools for filmmaking. The multiyear pact grants Google no access to A24’s catalog, but promises software that helps indie creators rather than replaces them. Early work will focus on an AI‑driven storyboard generator, a utility the studio hopes will speed pre‑visualization for its roster of directors.

Backrooms' $300 million box office haul and Marty Supreme’s near‑$200 million run have vaulted A24 into a $3.5 billion valuation, fueling its appetite for tech. Yet some of its own talent, including director Kane Parsons, denounces AI as “culturally and economically rot.” The partnership’s assist‑first framing tries to sidestep that backlash while offering practical gains for the roughly 2,000 storyboard artists still employed in Hollywood.

By targeting pre‑production rather than post‑production, Google aims to embed its cloud AI into the creative pipeline before rivals like Netflix’s recent acquisition of an AI post‑tool startup. If the storyboard generator proves useful, it could set a new industry standard for AI‑assisted planning, giving studios a significant cost‑effective shortcut without displacing the human talent that still dominates the craft.
