Google has begun rolling out its Gemini Spark agentic AI assistant to the Gemini app for macOS, but only paying Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US can access it. The assistant transforms Gemini from a passive chatbot into an active partner that can execute real tasks on your computer, representing Google's push into more autonomous AI systems.

Spark can organize your Downloads folder by sorting PDFs into designated folders, create spreadsheets using local files, and handle Workspace app tasks. Google plans to enable cross-device functionality later, allowing phone users to trigger actions on their laptops remotely. These capabilities require granting file permissions, though Google emphasizes users control what data the assistant can access.

The service costs $100 monthly for Google AI Ultra subscribers who are 18 or older. While Spark remains in beta testing, it signals Google's strategy to monetize advanced AI features through premium subscriptions rather than free offerings.

Integration extends to Google Tasks, Keep, and third-party services including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rental. This positions Spark as Google's competitive response to Microsoft's Copilot and other desktop AI assistants entering the market.
