DOJ subpoenas Reddit and X for anti‑ICE users' identities

The Justice Department has issued grand jury subpoena to Reddit and X, demanding the names, addresses and banking details of at least two anonymous users who posted anti‑ICE comments. The subpoenas came from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a Trump ally, and give the platforms a brief window to contest the demand before compliance, and could set a precedent for future online speech prosecutions.

Earlier this year Homeland Security sent administrative summons to Google, Reddit, Discord and Meta, trying to unmask ICE critics. Lawyers for the Reddit poster, Lauren Regan, say the DOJ escalated from an administrative request to a grand jury subpoena, a move that courts rarely dismiss without proof of oppression. Regan argues the subpoena threatens anonymous public expression online. The Reddit post simply read a profanity‑filled rant against ICE.

X’s client, represented by Joshua Koltun, posted a sarcastic comment about donating to the officer who killed Renee Good, including publicly available address information. Neither post indicated violent intent, yet the DOJ pursued the grand jury route after withdrawing the earlier administrative summons. These actions signal a push to expose voices on platforms, the litigation underscores mounting tension between tech platforms and federal law enforcement.
