Disney+ launches Verts vertical video feed

Disney+ is launching Verts, a new vertical video section that lets users scroll through short clips from movies and TV shows. The streaming service describes it as a “dynamic feed” designed to help viewers quickly find their next favorite watch, with the ability to jump straight into the full content. Disney first announced plans to add vertical video back in January.

This move isn't unique to Disney+ — Netflix announced a similar pivot to vertical video on its mobile app around the same time. Disney says its recommendation engine uses an “advanced algorithm” to ensure clips are relevant to each user. The company is leveraging its century-plus of content from its library while also planning to include “content from creators that reflects our fandoms.”

The addition of Verts represents Disney's attempt to capture user attention that might otherwise go to social platforms like YouTube and TikTok, many of which already feature cut-down clips of Disney-owned content. By creating its own addictive vertical video experience, Disney+ aims to keep viewers within its ecosystem rather than losing them to competitors.
