Bluetooth has become a cornerstone of modern tech, powering consumer, medical and industrial devices since the Bluetooth SIG set its standard. Its impact is everywhere, yet many users don’t realize it splits into two radio‑frequency modes: Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). Originating from a 1942 patent by Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil, the frequency‑hopping idea was adopted by the U.S. Navy and standardized by the FCC in 1998, paving the way for Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and 3G. The SIG, formed in 1998 by Intel, Nokia, IBM, Ericsson and Toshiba, has issued updates, the latest in 2025.

Bluetooth Classic uses low‑power radio waves to transfer files, stream audio and link devices. It operates on 79 channels in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, forming a point‑to‑point Piconet between a master (e.g., phone) and a slave (e.g., Car Play). With up to 1600 hops per second and speeds up to 3 Mb/s, it uses Basic Rate (BR) and Enhanced Data Rate (EDR), making it ideal for headphones, speakers and calls, though it drains batteries faster and can cause latency.

Bluetooth Low Energy, introduced in 2011, runs on 40 ISM channels and sends small bursts instead of continuous streams, extending battery life. It offers lower latency, broadcast and mesh support, and LE Secure Connections using elliptic‑curve algorithms for stronger security. These traits suit smart watches, wearables, IoT sensors, digital keys and medical devices like glucose monitors, making LE ideal where power and reliable low‑latency communication matter.
