Axiom’s Prada‑Inspired Lunar Suits Get the Inside Scoop

Spacecraft suits for NASA’s Artemis III and IV will come from Axiom Space, with a Prada‑inspired design. Inside sits a Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment, a tight‑fitting suit that circulates cold water to keep astronauts from overheating during strenuous lunar work in the 2027‑2028 missions.

Underneath the white shell, the Liquid Cooling Garment routes metabolic heat to a backpack‑mounted portable life support system, featuring a redundant cooling circuit. Axiom credits Prada’s engineered knitting expertise for the garment’s sleek look, while the outer AxEMU suit maintains safe pressure and filters exhaled CO₂ during spacewalks.

Designed for eight‑hour extravehicular activities, AxEMU supports body types from the 1st to the 99th percentiles, a wide departure from Apollo’s custom suits. Advanced visor coatings improve visibility, and in‑house gloves incorporate several new features, giving astronauts greater dexterity and protection against lunar dust.

Artemis III, slated for 2027, will test the new suit and landers before the first crewed Moon landing in 2028. Axiom says the suit withstands the south‑pole’s coldest temperatures for at least two hours, enabling astronauts to collect samples and search for water ice while looking like heroes.
