Axiom's Lunar Suit Ready Before 2031, NASA Says

NASA’s upcoming Artemis program hinges on a new commercial spacesuit from Axiom Space. After a recent report warned the suit might not be ready until 2031, the agency counters with confidence that astronauts will wear it in 2028. The suit has logged over 950 hours of crewed testing and is slated to finish design review this year.

Internally, NASA and Axiom have pushed the project forward, investing resources despite uncertain commercial demand. CEO Jonathan Cirtain said the suit will likely complete its critical design review this year, signaling progress. Axiom’s long‑term bet on future lunar demand could pay off if NASA succeeds in building a Moon base, turning the program into a commercial asset.

NASA plans Artemis III in 2027, with Orion docking to lunar lander prototypes in Earth orbit. That mission will carry an Axiom suit for microgravity demonstration, paving the way for a 2028 lunar landing. The suit’s readiness, therefore, is unlikely to derail the schedule, according to NASA administrator Jared Isaacman.

With testing milestones met and design reviews underway, the Axiom suit’s future looks solid. NASA’s confidence, backed by concrete progress, suggests the agency’s lunar ambitions will proceed as planned, keeping the 2028 landing target on track.
