Artemis II Captures Rare Earthset and Lunar Eclipse Photos

Astronauts aboard Artemis II broke distance records and turned their flight into a photo expedition, releasing images taken from the Moon’s far side. Among the shots, an “Earthset” shows our planet slipping behind the lunar horizon, echoing the famed Apollo 8 Earthrise. NASA highlighted the visual as a reminder of humanity’s expanding perspective.

During a 57‑minute solar eclipse, Orion passed more than 4,000 miles beyond the Moon, casting the spacecraft into total darkness. The crew filmed the event while protected by eclipse glasses, producing a series of stark, high‑contrast frames that complement the Earthset series. These visuals underscore the mission’s scientific and public‑engagement value.

While looping the Moon, the crew identified two previously uncharted craters, proposing the names Integrity and Carroll— the latter honoring Commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife. With splashdown slated for April 10 near San Diego, the mission’s imagery will bolster future lunar endeavors and keep the public eye on deep‑space exploration.
