Apple Watch ECG Feature Explained

Apple Watch users may not realize the device includes a dedicated ECG app that offers deeper heart health insights than the basic heart‑rate monitor. The ECG records electrical signals from the heart, tracing each beat for a detailed picture of rhythm and rate. All Apple Watch models from Series 4 onward (excluding SE) and all Ultra models support the feature, provided the watch runs the latest watchOS and iOS. The app is unavailable in some regions, including parts of Eastern Europe, Africa, Central and South America, and the Middle East.

To use the ECG, open the Health app, search for “ECG,” and follow setup. When taking a reading, ensure the watch fits snugly, rest your arms, and hold the Digital Crown for 30 seconds. Results include sinus rhythm (50‑100 bpm), atrial fibrillation (AFib), low/high heart‑rate alerts, inconclusive, and poor recording. Each outcome guides whether a doctor should be consulted or the test repeated.

Understanding these readings helps users monitor cardiovascular health responsibly, but the ECG is not a substitute for professional medical care.
