Apple's latest smart home push includes an updated HomePod mini speaker, officially called the HomePod mini 2. It looks almost identical to the original, but arrives in new colors for its fabric cover and adds several features exclusive to this version. The new model goes on sale October 30.

The biggest changes are audio-related. Sound Glow mimics album artwork on the speaker's light panel by displaying matching colors, while soundscape modes show light patterns resembling raindrops or ocean waves. Two HomePod minis can also serve as speakers for any Mac over AirPlay, and that connection stays persistent until changed.

In the living room, four HomePod mini 2 units can work as surround sound speakers with the new Apple TV 4K. The feature also works with the second-generation HomePod, so users can pair two of each speaker with their TV. Previously, only two HomePods could be used in the living room. Apple has added blue, green and pink to the existing white and Midnight colors. The pink option pairs well with the pink iMac, while the blue and green versions also look attractive.

Siri AI is not available at launch, and Apple has not given a timeframe for its arrival, though the speaker will support it eventually. The HomePod mini 2 is available for pre-order today at $149, compared with the original's $99 price in 2020. Engadget plans to test a review unit to determine whether the new features justify the price increase and years-long wait.
