At $299, the new Apple TV 4K raises questions about longevity. Priced at $299, the new Apple TV 4K launches November 13 featuring an A19 chip and improved Siri Remote. While older Apple TV models have received software updates for eight to ten years, Apple does not guarantee support duration.
The impressive support streak ended in September 2026 with tv OS 27, which requires the 2021 Apple TV 4K or newer, leaving 2015 and 2017 models behind. Amazon promises at least four years of Fire TV security updates, but Apple offers no written estimate. Users should consider performance over age, replacing when menus become slow, apps crash, or services stop working.
Security patches matter for smart home hub use. The new model offers a faster A19 processor and built-in microphones, but upgrading is difficult when current devices remain functional. A replacement Siri Remote costs $59, and iPhone can serve as a temporary remote.
