Since 2015, the Apple Pencil has become indispensable for iPad users, but with four generations available, choosing the right model is confusing. The two latest—the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C)—look similar and both deliver "pixel-perfect precision" with low latency, hover preview, and tilt sensitivity. However, the Apple Pencil Pro costs $129 versus $79 for the USB-C model.

The Pro adds features for creatives: heightened pressure sensitivity, "Barrel Roll" gyroscope rotation for brush orientation, squeeze gestures to switch tools, double-tap switching, and haptic feedback. It also charges wirelessly when magnetically attached, integrates with Find My, and offers free engraving.

Compatibility is the deciding factor. The Pro only works with newer M-series iPads: iPad Pro 13/11-inch (M4, M5), iPad Air 13/11-inch (M2–M4), and iPad mini (A17 Pro). The USB-C model supports a wider range, including older iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini models. Students may find the USB-C sufficient, while artists may justify the Pro's premium.
