Amazon rolls out Story So Far recap feature to Kindle devices

Amazon is finally deploying its 'Story So Far' feature to Kindle devices and the iOS Kindle app, offering readers a way to refresh their memory on books they've set aside. The tool works like a TV show's 'Previously on...' segment, summarizing key characters and plot points so users can jump back into their reading without getting lost.

Amazon first announced the feature in September as an extension of the existing Recap functionality. Story So Far will work across thousands of English titles for US customers, supporting both purchased and borrowed ebooks. Readers can access summaries by holding down on a book cover to find the Read Recap button, or through the three-dot menu while reading.

The rollout comes with notable limitations. Android users won't see this feature in their Kindle app, and older Kindle devices may not receive support. Even books with Recap compatibility won't automatically get Story So Far summaries, which leaves the exact catalog scope unclear.

For readers who abandon books after lengthy breaks, this feature addresses a genuine pain point. Instead of struggling through forgotten plotlines, users can quickly get oriented and finish titles they might otherwise give up on, potentially reducing ebook abandonment rates.
