AirPods and heart implants: Cardiologists warn of magnetic interference risks

Cardiologists are warning patients with cardiovascular implantable devices to keep smartphones and wireless earbuds at a distance, including popular products like Apple's AirPods. The concern centers on magnetic fields that can trigger magnet-safe modes on pacemakers and defibrillators, potentially preventing these devices from detecting dangerous heart rhythms.

Modern heart implants automatically switch to safety mode when exposed to magnetic fields of 10 Gauss or more, a threshold easily exceeded by consumer electronics. This safety feature originally protected patients during MRI scans and other medical procedures involving strong magnets. The temporary disruption, even if brief, can have serious consequences for patients relying on these devices.

A 2022 study published in Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology found that AirPods and other devices like the iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple Pencil, and Microsoft Surface Pen can disrupt cardiovascular implants. The research confirmed previous findings about smartphones, smartwatches, and even electronic cigarettes affecting medical devices through magnetic induction.

The FDA recommends keeping electronic devices at least six inches from cardiovascular implants, meaning those with heart conditions should avoid front shirt pockets. While the study doesn't ban AirPods entirely, maintaining distance during use remains the safest approach for vulnerable patients.
