Use Mac Finder to Rescue Stuck iPad Updates

When an iPad update stalls or lands on a recovery screen, the on‑device Software Update often can’t finish. Apple’s Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later provides a manual path to install the same iPadOS build. Connecting the tablet via a data‑capable USB‑C cable lets the Mac push the update and recover devices that won’t start.

Before launching, back up the iPad and ensure both devices stay powered. The built‑in Trust prompt must be accepted, and a cable that supports data—not just charging—is required; the cable shipped with the iPad usually suffices. In Finder, select the iPad under Locations, click Check for Update, then Download and Update. The process can take several minutes depending on download size and connection speed.

Finder mirrors the OTA update’s verification and delivers identical features, bug fixes, and security patches, but it demands a Mac and a hands‑on approach. When the iPad is stuck in recovery mode, choose Finder’s Update option first to reinstall iPadOS without erasing apps or data; only if that fails should you select Restore, which wipes the device. Using Finder turns a stalled update into a recoverable event.
